4 for 4, doesn’t get much better than that! The Southern Wells wrestling team brought 4 participants to compete at the Jay County Regional and advanced all 4 to the Fort Wayne Semi-State next week at the War Memorial Coliseum. William Fiechter had another dominate day winning the first match over Dalton May from Cowan by a 13-0 major decision. That put William up against Da’Marion Walker from Muncie Central in the semi-finals and after battling through some sickness William was able to pin Walker 4:21 into the match. That setup the Regional Championship match against Fiechter and A.J. Dull of South Adams and Fiechter was able to cruise to a 8-3 decision win. This was William’s 2nd regional title which makes him the only SW wrestler to ever win multiple Regional Championships! Josh Beeks at 145lbs. also started the day strong with a pin over Dalton Love of Delta in 2:39. Josh’s semi-final match was against Tyler Jones from Monroe Central who had an impressive 32-2 record going into the match. Josh wrestled a solid match winning 6-2 and punching his ticket to the Regional Championship. In the championship, it was no stranger to Josh has he was matched up against Logan Macklin from Adams Central for the 4th time this season. Unfortunately Josh never really got much going as he fell by pin to Macklin in 1:31. Jed Perry also started his day picking up a convincing 13-3 major decision over Josh Jones of Delta in the first round. In the semi-final Jed caught Jacob Duncan from Winchester, yes another Jacob Duncan, on his back in just :53. With that win it setup a rematch of the Sectional Championship with Perry vs Jon Ruble of Bellmont. Was a great championship match, however Jed didn’t quite have enough as he fell 8-6 to the #11 state ranked Ruble. Now our Jacob Duncan at 170lbs. wrestled a great 1st round knocking off the sectional champion Curren West of Muncie Central by fall in just 1:53 to advance to Semi-State for the first time in his career. Jacob ran into a buzz saw in the semi-finals losing to Christen Summersett of South Adams by pin in :41. For the second week in a row Duncan was able to jump out to a big lead on Sam Walker of Norwell but again couldn’t hold on as he lost by fall and had to settle for a 4th place finish. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys. Everyone of them had to deal with some kind of adversity today and they all continued to battle hard and hopefully can learn something from this tournament. I am so excited for the opportunity to take 4 guys to the Semi-State and watch them compete for the ultimate goal of any high school wrestler, the chance to wrestle at Bankers Life Field house in the State tournament the following week. What a great group of young men to represent Southern Wells on and off the mats. Thanks for the amazing fan support at Regional and I ask everyone continues to stand behind these guys and support them in this journey of HS wrestling!
