Raiders News · Wrestling Season not over yet, as 4 advance to Regional

The season ends for some, but the journey just begins for others as the Southern Wells wrestling team was able to advance 4 individuals to next weeks Regional tournament held at Jay County this upcoming Saturday. William Fiechter, Josh Beeks, Jed Perry and Jacob Duncan will be representing Southern Wells as they look to qualify for Semi-State with a top 4 finish at Regional. Starting off at 106lbs. Kat Ramsey fell in her first two matches and seen her season come to end as she did not place, but did a great job for the team scoring team points when she could. Blake Maloney at 113lbs. continued to improve all season but fell one match short of advancing as he picked up a 5th place finish which puts him in the position to be an alternate at his weight class for next weeks Regional. Taylor Wells not only finished her season but also her career as she too fell in the opening two rounds and put her out of the tournament. Taylor has accomplished a great deal in her wrestling career being the first female to ever place in the IHSGW State tournament not once but twice and also did her part of filling the Varsity 126lb spot when called upon. At 132lbs Cameron Grove greatly improved from his freshman season as he finished the year with a 13-13 record and a 5th place finish at Sectional. William Fiechter continues to roll as he picked up his 3rd Sectional title in his 3 years of high school wrestling at 138lbs. Josh Beeks continues to close the gap on Adams Central’s Logan Macklin as he fell 7-5 in Overtime to Macklin in the championship match for the 2nd week in a row. We could quite possible see this matchup again next week with a Regional Championship on the line. At 152lbs. Coleman Beeks puts the finishing touch on what has been an awesome wrestling career for SW. Coleman finishes his career with a win over Blackford’s Isaac Justice and a 5th place finish. Coleman compiled 103 wins for the Raiders in his 4 year Varsity record and played a significant part of the team bringing home a 7th place finish at the team state tournament this year. At 160lbs. Jed Perry found himself in another championship match, this time matched up against #11 in the State Jon Ruble of Bellmont. Jed dropped a 7-4 decision to claim 2nd place with hopes of seeing this rematch next Saturday for a Regional title this time! Jacob Duncan used a great 1st rd match scoring a pin win over (26-5) Jayden Hindsley of Union City to setup his path of becoming a Regional Qualifier for the 2nd time. Jacob dropped his last 2 matches and had to settle for a 4th place finish but has a great opportunity to become a Semi-State qualifier this week. Clay Smith continues to battle with the big guys as he wrestles up a weight class and does anything and everything he can to help the team. Unfortunately Clay fell in the first two rounds and did not place but has been a great attribute to the team. Cole Meeks at 195lbs. wrestled a good tournament, but found himself one win away as he picked up another 5th place finish for the Raiders.  Cole was really starting to find his grove and wrestling tough, but unfortunately couldn’t crack the top 4 at his weight class.  Tucker Corwin also finished his first wrestling season as he fell in the first two rounds and did not place. Tucker showed a lot of courage and commitment this season and I look forward to seeing what he can do the next couple years!   Overall I couldn’t be more proud of what this team has accomplished this season finishing the year with a 12-9 dual meet record and 7th place in the 1a Team State Tournament. Now as we focus on the 4 individuals representing Southern Wells in the tournament series there is no doubt they will do their best, as we have 4 guys capable of advancing out of the Regional Tournament and beyond. It is a fun time of year and can’t wait to get back to work this week with Intensity, Consistency, and constant improvement as we prepare for the next step in this journey.
